The biggest and most prestigious of these competitions is the Classic Fishing Festival, organised by the Council with support from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Inland Fisheries and part sponsored by Waterways Ireland. The Classic, now in its 42nd year, attracted over 200 anglers to the district earlier this month and is still the fishing competition that every angler wants to win. The Council is delighted to be associated with this prestigious festival. In addition to the Classic, a number of other Angling Festivals take place every Spring and in recent years, new festivals have been established in the Autumn, such as the Fermanagh Cup and the cross-border World Pairs Competition. A new Hall of Fame - established in partnership with Fermanagh & Omagh Sports Forum - to honour local sportsmen and women who have achieved sporting success at national and international level has been launched at Omagh Leisure Complex, joining Fermanagh Lakeland Forum as a host venue for the Hall of Fame in the district. Three sporting icons from the Omagh area, former Spurs and Northern Ireland International Footballer, Gerry Armstrong, Tyrone GAA Footballer and Ireland International compromise rules player, Matthew Donnelly and former Ulster and Ireland international Rugby Union player, Willie Anderson, were the first inductees into the new Hall of Fame at the Complex, with information panels and photographs of each on display. For further information, including eligibility criteria and the nomination process, visit the Council website or contact the Council. The Council continues to invest in sporting infrastructure and facilities across the district to create more opportunities for our residents to get active and enjoy the benefits of physical activity. Recently, a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) which can accommodate a number of sports for all ages was completed in Bellanaleck representing a total investment of £116,000. The MUGA is a free to use facility on a casual basis which has been well received by the local community.
