The elements of equipment and inclusive play parks are constructed where possible to be comfortably used by children of all different sizes, postures, sensory needs, motor control and mobility. Inclusive play parks are designed so that every child, regardless of their disabilities, has an equal ability to play independently and interact with their peers on an even playing field. This equal opportunity helps them keep up developmentally with their peers through challenging play opportunities. Play parks shall be designed where possible to be inclusive and integrate opportunities and amenities for children with disabilities. All accessible equipment shall be provided where possible and integrated within the play park. Sensory experiences as well as physical access will be a key element of consideration. 6. Connectivity Access and connection to play parks is a fundamental requirement to ensure that the parks are accessible and available to the local community and visitors. Connectivity in the form of safe pathways and, where possible, car parking will be considered when upgrading any existing or developing new play parks. Connectivity will consider links to residential as well as urban and retail areas along with any parks or other public spaces. In addition, an optional component which may be incorporated is: Special Features Area This is an optional component that may be included in a play park. Such features such as a skateboard area can discourage children from practising their skills in less acceptable locations. Other special feature items could include interactive public art, chess boards, a water feature, open air theatre or informal sporting facilities. Consideration will be given to developing and incorporating unique historical events, cultural stories and legends to play parks. 40 Inclusive play parks, therefore, do not just provide access to facilities but makes those facilities usable by all people. They are developmentally appropriate for every single child, with or without any given ability.
