49 Consider professional assistance to undertake design and layout; Select equipment and surfacing which meets the Standards; Ensure it is installed by a competent person in accordance with EN1176; and Have a post-installation inspection carried out by an accredited and recognised independent Body. The Council shall ensure that all play parks and adopted play parks shall comply with the current British or national standard. The current standard is British Standard EN1176 and covers general safety requirements for public playground equipment and surfacing. To ensure the standards are achieved, the Council shall: Play Park standards Design workshops; Involvement in location selection; Consideration of transport options; Proximity to services; Suitable balance between surveillance and secluded site surrounding; and Nearby residents and businesses. Facilities such as congregation areas have been identified as a need to encourage social interaction, however, it is recognised that such areas require careful design and locating to create both a ‘safe space’ and avoid an area of antisocial behaviour. Community consultation, and particularly consultation with youth, in the design of any youth space development or upgrade will be essential.
