“The Daily Mile” Initiative Simply put, “The Daily Mile” is 15 minutes during the school day, at a time of the teacher’s choosing, when children jog or run one mile, at their own pace. It’s a simple and straightforward initiative that has been acknowledged for its benefits in reducing childhood obesity, improving children’s mental health, concentration, mood, behaviour and general wellbeing. If you are a teacher, a member of a board of governors, or on the parent and teachers association, we would like to encourage you to learn more about “The Daily Mile” initiative and encourage your school to participate. “The Daily Mile” is a free, effective initiative that any school can implement without the need for staff training. If you would like more information on this initiative, visit www.thedailymile.co.uk or contact Lyndsey Finlay who is the local co-ordinator employed by the Western Health and Social Care Trust on 07528 958 251 Community Planning Focus on Wellbeing Initiatives Play Matters - Physical &Mental Health and Wellbeing Freely chosen play (play which is directed by children) is critically important for all children as part of their everyday lives, and access to quality, unstructured play is known to help improve children’s overall health, well-being and development. Community Planning partners are working together to better understand and promote all aspects of play. A number of ‘influencer workshops’ will be held in November and December which will ensure that decision makers and service providers in the district have a wider understanding of the benefits of play and leisure for children and the importance of creating child-friendly and play- friendly communities. Key benefits of play include improved physical and mental health, better problem solving and creative thinking, greater emotional health and social skills. Affording children the time, space and opportunity to ‘play’ is essential.
