A major new project to transform the former EnniskillenWorkhouse is making progress. The Council, in partnership with South West College, has been awarded pre-development funding of £221,000 to work up designs and plans in a bid to restore and conserve the only remaining building of the former Enniskillen Workhouse – the Entrance Block. This is the first stage of funding awarded. The project proposal is to sensitively refurbish the building bringing approximately 480m² of floor space back into use. The building will be used to exhibit artefacts and photographs and other memoirs relating to life in workhouses and tell the story of the Enniskillen workhouse and the people who were housed there. The surviving workshouse records and minute books will also be displayed. Additionally, the Enniskillen Workhouse back to the future building will be used as a hub for business innovation and enterprise. Kriterion Conservation Architects have been appointed to develop the plans and drawings which will be used to apply for the next round of funding of £2.3m to see the project brought to life. Enniskillen Workhouse opened in 1844 to accommodate 1,000 people who, due to a range of circumstances, found themselves in financial distress. The building was one of 160 workhouses throughout Ireland designed by architect George Wilkinson. The main workhouse was demolished in 1964 and all that remains today is the Grade B2 listed Entrance Block, which is currently ‘at risk’ and in need of urgent repair. Throughout the restoration works a dedicated heritage skills and education programme will enable more than 100 local craftspeople and contractors to benefit from accredited training, and 12 apprenticeships will be created.
