38 Citizen Science & Research ‘Citizen science’ is defined as ‘ scientific work undertaken by members of the general public’ , often in collaboration with or under the direction of professional scientists and scientific institutions. The Council and Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark staff champion various citizen science initiatives throughout the year, enabling schools and communities to take part. We also signpost and alert the public of easy and interesting-to-do activities, often taking place in their garden or local area. We will continue to support and encourage people to become citizen scientists through facilitating training and volunteering, by raising awareness of these schemes through social media, and by taking part in these schemes by recording wildlife on Council estate. Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark staff also actively facilitate, engage and promote environmental research at all levels within the Global Geopark area. Engagement Council is keen to explore offering more opportunities for learning and engagement through conservation volunteer programmes, teacher training programmes, landowner guidance on nature friendly farming and pesticide reduction advice for the public. This could be implemented through in-house support, through funded projects or through partnership working. 9.5 Theme 5: Education and Outreach
