6 in-FO in Fermanagh & Omagh | Winter 2022 West Tyrone DEA In this issue we get up close and personal with the West Tyrone District Electoral Area, and take a look at what makes this area special. Dromore – population of 1,198 in the 2011 census. Townland name originates from an ancient stone situated on a hill near to where a Cistercian Abbey was located. Home to at least 9 mass rocks dating back to the 16th century. Drumquin – population of approximately 600. It is referenced in the writings of Benedicty Kiely and the songs of Felix Kearney and also has a reputation for fishing. 549.09 km² Geographic Area 18.30 % of the total area of the district Wards of Dromore, Drumquin, Fairywater, Fintona, Newtownsaville and Trillick WithinWest Tyrone DEA, the Council provides... Fintona – population of almost 1,200. It has the Ecclesville Desmense, the Ecclesville Centre and of course was renowned for its horse-drawn tram which ferried passengers from the train station to Fintona Junction – a distance of 1 mile. The tram made its last journey on 30 September 1957 when the Enniskillen – Omagh railway line closed. Trillick – at approx. 2,500 people, it is the largest centre of population in the DEA. The Tyrone O’Neills fought and defeated the Fermanagh Maguires at Trillick in 1379, a war that settled the Tyrone Fermanagh border where it currently stands just outside Trillick.
