Nestled within the breathtaking Sperrins region, the Giants of the Sperrins have been born from the geology, archaeology and heritage of the area, creating a unique sculpture trail to explore. Three Giant sculptures – created by the internationally renowned artist, Thomas Dambo - call us to explore the story of the many generations that have helped to shape the landscape and to appreciate its rich and unique culture. They also call us into the landscape - to notice, reflect, embrace and cherish this wonderful place – the Sperrins. The Giants embody the past, present and future. Nowanois – The Storyteller – at the Glenelly Valley, near Cranagh, recalls times and generations gone by. Darach – The Guardian – at Mullaghcarn Mountain, Gortin Glen Forest Park, watches over the present. Ceoldán – The Stargazer – at Davagh Forest, looks to the future and the unknown. This project has been part funded under the Rural Tourism Scheme of the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme 2014-2023 by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs and the European Union and in partnership with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and Mid Ulster District Council. The project is part of a wider plan by the three Councils to promote rural tourism in this area of natural beauty and built heritage. Thomas has built giant landmark sculptures and installed exhibitions throughout the world including Asia, Europe, and South and North America. Through his work, the sculptor advocates the imaginative message of a sustainable way of living and the importance of visiting nature to foster the bond that makes the modern human care for and protect it.
