138 The End of the World the world. It doesn’t exist.” The orphan child doubted this even more than he doubted the story about the bears killing the apostles. In fact, having just heard what Bridget said, the orphan child was now absolutely certain there was an end of the world, and what’s more he was certain that Bridget had seen it but wasn’t going to say anything about it because of whatever had happened out there. However, because he was only a child, he was never going to say what he thought because he knew that if he did he’d only get a clout and then he’d be sent to bed without his supper, and he didn’t want to get a clout and go to bed hungry. So the orphan child said nothing. What he did instead was he thought to himself what he’d have liked to have said, which nobody heard because nobody can hear the thoughts of children. “When I grow up,” he said to himself, “I’m going to leave here and I’m going to go out and I’m going to find the end of the world.”
