12 I Age Friendly Strategy 2026 - 2030 Age Friendly Strategy 2026 - 2030 I 13 THEME 1: INFRASTRUCTURE The built environment (including outdoor spaces, pavements, road crossings, parking, outdoor seating and accessible buildings) has an important impact on the mobility, independence and quality of life of people in later life. AIM ACTION - How will it be Addressed? Improving public spaces for older people 1.1(a) To assess the accessibility of local venues for people with disabilities and older people, working in partnership with people with disabilities and older people to design and implement an Age and Access Friendly Charter 1.1(b) To work with public sector partners and local businesses to improve the accessibility of local venues for older people and people with disabilities 1.1(c)To enhance access to park facilities across the district, making them appealing to all ages 1.1(d) Identify new/future projects benefitting those with stability/mobility issues such as Footway Improvements including dropped kerbs 1.1(e) Consider older pedestrians when assessing introduction of controlled crossings Support people to remain safely in their own homes for longer 1.2(a) Increase the level of adaptations to housing stock in the area for older people 1.2(b) Deliver targeted communication to ensure older people, carers, and frontline staff are aware of agencies offering assistance with small household tasks 1.2(c) Enable people to live safely in their homes through Home Safety, Fire Safety and Crime Prevention checks Improving transport for older people 1.3(a) Promote smart passes, through various marketing initiatives with good news stories promoting services and easy to read timetables 1.3(b) Engage with decision makers to maintain transport services, improving the reliability, accessibility and affordability of transport within town, rural areas and hospital settings Alignment with Community Plan: Outcome 2: Older people lead more independent, engaged and socially connected lives Outcome 3: Our communities are inclusive, safe, resilient and empowered Outcome 6: Our outstanding natural and built environment is sustainably managed and, where possible, enhanced THEME 2: PARTICIPATION AND ACCESS Providing accessible activities and programmes is key to enabling older people participate in community life and feel connected. AIM ACTION - How will it be Addressed? Increasing access through locally based delivery 2.1(a) Co-ordinate an annual Age Friendly activity programme for delivery in local communities 2.1(b) Promotion of grant aid and opportunities to help community groups provide activities for older people as part of a district wide Positive Ageing approach 2.1(c) Work in partnership to support shops and businesses to be Age Friendly through an Age and Access Charter, JAM card training and supporting older people who wish to continue working Improving access to public and community transport 2.2(a) Work with Translink and Community Transport to support older people access services and activities Alignment with Community Plan: Outcome 1: Our people are healthy and well - physically, mentally and emotionally Outcome 2: Older people lead more independent, engaged and socially connected lives Outcome 3: Our communities are inclusive, safe, resilient and empowered Image courtesy of The Centre for Ageing Better.
